SINGLE SPOTLIGHT: Desert Sharks - “Sleepy Pie”
Released: February 22nd, 2023
Substitute Scene Records
Yesterday, Desert Sharks treated us to the first single off of their newest record, The Tower, set for release March 31st! With an exciting announcement and premiere of the single’s release, as well as a music video to boot, “Sleepy Pie” gives us a fine window into what is to come with the new album. In today’s edition of SINGLE SPOTLIGHT, we’ll be talking all about the fuzzy, majestic vibe of “Sleepy Pie” and why you won’t want to miss out on the Brooklyn-based 4-piece’s newest material. Be sure to do yourself an honest favor and follow the band as well as Substitute Scene Records at all available platforms, including the ones listed above!
It has been nearly 4 years since the release of Baby’s Gold Death Stadium, and even though 2021 saw a cover of ‘Til Tuesday’s “Voices Carry”, we have been eagerly awaiting some new Desert Sharks jams. “Sleepy Pie” delivers a delicious sampling of flavor to the tastebuds in anticipation for what the full course of The Tower has to offer. Hitting the punky, catchy spirit of something like L7, while gnashing teeth with the grit and fuzz, instrumentally, of something more along the lines of the early days of Wolf Alice, Desert Sharks have trademarked their very own brand of surf-doom rock, it seems. But even with the punch and rawness typically seen in garage rock outfits, their music does not go without its dreamy layers, as well.
What results is a brilliantly composed track with both its poppy bliss to keep you singing along and bopping your head to the beat, while also not shying from its finesse and standouts to keep things flavorful and unique. The Sharks may have some indicators of who their influences are within their sound, but only to a tinge of familiarity, and not at all subtracting from their originality. It’s probably the best damn pie you’ll find this side of the Mississippi, in fact. Agent Dale Cooper, eat your heart out!
The video is quite the attention-grabber, as well. Presenting a scenario that almost feels like a Heathers (1989) type of vibe, the band lets you in on their Friday-night sleepover party, as good clean fun quickly dissolves into some supernatural meddling when they get their hands on a mysterious deck of tarot cards. Possessed by other worldly spirits, the demonic appearance dawned by each member only leads to even further sleepover party mischief just before each is found passed out and snoozing hard by the end of the song and video. The metaphors and meanings behind all of this is likely up to the viewer’s discretion, but we’ll tell you this much – it’s a pretty badass video with an even more badass song to soundtrack it!
Don’t sleep on Desert Sharks. Slip into the grungey dreamland that is “Sleepy Pie” ASAP! Be sure to follow and keep up with the band as they set to release The Tower, and keep your eyes open for the next live date nearest you! We salute you, Desert Sharks!
